Got a bun in the oven? It's no secret that pregnancy changes your body. I mean, c'mon, you're literally growing a whole new human in there. But, sometimes it's not easy to tell which changes are normal and which are cause for concern.

What is normal discharge?
Look, people with vaginas have been getting discharge since before puberty. However, when a woman becomes pregnant, "her vagina largely takes on a personality of its own," says Dr. Sheryl Ross, an OB-GYN and women's health expert at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.
"Normal vaginal discharge, known as leukorrhea [say: loo kuh ree uh], is thin, clear, or milky white, and mild smelling. As your pregnancy progresses, this discharge usually becomes more noticeable, and it’s heaviest at the end of your pregnancy," reveals Debra Rose Wilson, holistic healthcare practitioner.
"In the last week or so of pregnancy, it may contain streaks of sticky, jelly-like pink mucus. This is called a "show" and happens when the mucus that's been present in your cervix during pregnancy comes away. It's a sign that the body is starting to prepare for birth [and is typically no cause for concern]," according to the National Health Service.
What is abnormal discharge?
The American Pregnancy Association reveals: "If the vaginal discharge is green or yellowish, strong-smelling, and/or accompanied by redness or itching, you may have a vaginal infection."
Be sure to check in with your midwife or doctor if you're worried about any of your symptoms. When in doubt, it's always better to play it safe. Contact a medical professional immediately if you have any vaginal bleeding while you're pregnant.
Abnormal discharge/itching may be caused by a yeast infection, otherwise known as candidiasis or thrush, which is common during pregnancy "due to hormone fluctuations," according to Dr. Karen Gill. It can be easily treated by a medical professional, but to help prevent a yeast infection:
- wear loose, breathable clothing
- wear cotton underwear
- dry your genitals after showering, swimming, or exercising
- add yogurt and other fermented foods to your diet to promote healthy bacteria
